The Emergency

With the Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022, one of Europe’s largest refugee movements in decades began. Many people took their pets with them as they fled – often without papers, food or veterinary care.

Thousands were stranded at the border crossings. Animals were exhausted, injured or sick; within the war zone itself countless animals were left behind or trapped.

Our Deployment

The ADRG set up a supply station at the Ukrainian border and additionally supported evacuations within Ukraine.

• Emergency veterinary care and registration of refugees’ accompanying pets.
• Provision of food, water, transport boxes and equipment at the border crossings.
• Evacuation of people and animals right up to the areas of the front line under military protection.
• Provision of supplies also in underserved regions.
• Cooperation with various aid organisations, authorities (fire service, police) and the military.
• Support with staff, veterinarians and relief supplies from the German Animal Welfare Federation (Deutscher Tierschutzbund); our supply station was later handed over to an IFAW team for continued operation.

Over several weeks, people and animals in the region were cared for, evacuated and brought to safety.
